The Rummell Drain was constructed in the late 1960s to provide storm drainage relief to portions of the City of Southfield, Lathrup Village and the Village of Beverly Hills. The Drain services approximately 3,300 acres and is almost 20,500 feet in length. Utilizing computer modeling, HRC completed a study of the Drain in the late 1990s to address a number of localized problems on an open-channel portion of the Drain between 12 Mile and 13 Mile roads in the City of Southfield.
Following the Study, HRC assisted the City of Southfield and the Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner to obtain $363,000 in grant funding through the Rouge River National Wet Weather Demonstration Project. Ultimately, HRC completed the design and assisted with the construction of approximately one (1) mile of the problematic Drain. The restoration included removal of accumulated sediments, channel reshaping to enhance flow characteristics as well as aesthetics, native vegetative bank stabilization with the use of a geo-cellular confinement system and installation of nine (9) low-profile concrete in-stream dams to maintain water level in the channel during dry weather periods and create aquatic habitat.
